Here’s another rare monster considered a “holy grail” pleco in the hobby, the Blue Eyed Pleco or Blue Eye Panaque remains a show stopper and impressive fish even though they are becoming easier find in the recent years. Like many Panaque species, they are found in fast moving waters – specifically, the Rio Magdalena in Colombia, which was once essentially inaccessible due to guerrilla and paramilitary presence in the region, which really isn’t the issue it once was in the past. In the home aquarium, Blue Eyed Plecos are generally hardy, although they will do best if provided with moderate to strong current and plenty of driftwood to both hide among and graze on. All Panaque species are wood eaters, and I recommend using a specialty diet like Repashy’s Morning Wood or other type of Pleco food with similar ingredients to ensure your Pleco gets everything they require to thrive!
